Have you ever wondered what the acronyms behind the real estate professional's names meant? Here in Charlotte, North Carolina and the surrounding areas, I have noticed there are 8 common designation acronyms. The meanings of the acronyms are explained in their titles. We have:
ABR - Accredited Buyers Representative
ASP - Accredited Staging Professional
CRS - Certified Residential Specialist
GRI - Graduate Realtor Institute
SRES - Seniors Real Estate Specialist
CRP - Certified Relocation Professional
SFR - Short Sale and Foreclosure Resource
e-PRO - Internet Professionals
There are different requirements for each of the designations. Many of them require classroom time, experience, passing exams, and huge fees. Some require membership to the National Association of Realtors, the Local Board of Realtors, the State Association of Realtors, and the designation's membership. Many times these carry annual dues.
As you can see, there is a lot of time and money that goes into having those acronyms behind a Realtor's name. Why do some Realtors make this investment? I chose to take the addtional classes and make the investments so that I could be of the best service to my clients. I also feel that continuous education in any field is important. I continue to take these classes and make these investments, to stay on top of this field.
Some say experience is the most important thing a Realtor should have and that the designations are not important. Experience is VERY important, but it is also VERY important to stay up to date on all the ways a Realtor can best serve their clients, and doesn't that information also come from outside sources, say teachers, that prepare Realtors for the changing markets with the best information. I don't know about you, but my bet is on the professional with both, experience and the investments of the designations.
