Charlotte and the DNC

Charlotte and the DNC

Well, where do I start? I guess the question that has to be answered is “was the DNC good for Charlotte” and to certain degree, was it good for me? I have to give a resounding YES on both accounts. Regardless of your political affiliation, for Charlotte, the DNC was a success on multiple levels, mostly, because of the national media coverage. Charlotte was given a worldwide spotlight were people from every part of our nation had a chance to see firsthand, the beauty that is our fair city. The Skyline, Restaurants, Arenas and Hotels took center stage and they glowed. All the people I had a chance to speak with had nothing but praise for the city and her inhabitants (although most of her inhabitants were from out of town this particular week). Although the weather was not completely cooperative, there were plenty of sunny moments for the visitors to set out and explore and I would argue that the rain offered a little excitement in the fray. If I could have my way though, I would have like to have seen the weather crisp and dry as it was the week following the DNC festivities. As I walked the streets and met so many wonderful locals, visitors and celebrities, I couldn’t help but feel the sheer electricity buzzing about the city. It was a Carnival and a Mardi-Gras, a Reality Show and a Fair…a Spectacle and a Coming of Age! I think the coverage has generated a lot of buzz about Charlotte and I’m sure when the thought of moving comes to mind for potential buyers, Charlotte will be on their short list due in no small part to the Convention. The Police and Secret service performed admirably as did the local residence. The only bumps in the road were the constant and often confusing road closures/changes and the irritating presence of the 50 or so “Occupy” protesters that were mostly contained unless they decided to change their marching direction as they seemed to do often. Fortunately for me, they didn’t keep me from meeting a News Commentator I admire…let’s just say he is a ‘Factor’! As for me, I had the opportunity to network and due to my local contacts, I was given Secret Service Clearance which gave me all access to the arena, all the secured areas and the ability to meet and speak with many a Political and Entertainment celebrity. Meeting James Taylor was a treat and although he’s not interested in buying in Charlotte at this time (yes, I had to ask…it’s my job) I feel that “Carolina will always be on his mind”. Another fantastic outcome for me was when I got to meet and hang out with Mr. Major Garrett (Former White House Correspondent and Fox News reporter). We talked shop for about 3 hours and I relished the chance to pick the brain of a man that personally interviewed the President on 4 separate occasions.  Meeting Rock stars (Mark McGrath and Dave Navarro) was cool and Comedian D.L. Hughley, who is a true Gentleman, was also a lot of fun! Alas, I also met the one and only Maxine Waters. A woman I couldn’t disagree with more, yet…one of the most friendly and warm celebrities I met all week. All in all the DNC was a success for all involved. It showed off Charlotte’s beauty and charm, the warmth and welcoming nature of her citizens and more importantly, her ability to comfortably accommodate an event of this stature which will undoubtedly turn the heads of future event planners and developers toward the Shinning Crown that is the Queen City! My DNC Pics here. Enjoy!
